Bucking Optimization

MPM's NextGen Bucking Optimizer is a new generation of optimized bucking that can greatly increase the productivity of most sawmills. MPM's NextGen Bucking Optimizer employs X-Y or 3-D model of the scanned stem and then optmizes based on an extensive product fitting process in each log to determine the most valuable bucking decision based on mill requirments.

The program is designed to determine the optimum recovery based on dollar value or volume recovery. The search for the optimum log breakdown solution relies on accurate modelling of the downstream sawmill machine centeres including log rotation, primary breakdown and curve sawing machinery. The solution also relies on precise cant and board modelling

To make it possible for sawmills to evolve towards "mill-wide control". MPM Engineering designed it's NextGen Bucking Optimizer with the capability to exchange information with other machine centers in the sawmill to facilitate real-time feedback, production monitoring, remote setting of the operating machinery and the ability for product schedulling.

Log Bucking Graphic

  • X-Y or full profile log modelling.
  • Designed to operate with different types of scanners suitable for scanning of stems (transverse, lineal through beam, combination, profile).
  • Optimization includes curve sawing in it's solutions (turn it "off" or "on" as required).
  • Simulation software package for off-line analysis of stem images to evaluate different parameters and machinery configurations.
  • Grade optimization basd on manual or automatic input of stem surface characteristics (such as knots, cat face, clear zoness) and aspects of stem shape (such as flared butt, sweep, crook and taper).
  • Each stem is optimized by determining the highest volume combination of logs attainable. The value of each log is determined using a product fit optimization process which is based on capabilities of the breakdown equipment in the sawmill by fitting the user defined products in all valid combinations and positions.
  • Operator can override the solution to account for defects such as rot, breakage or grade that the scanner does not recognize. The NextGen Bucking Optimizer will then re-optimize the remainder of the stem on line while the stem moves forward towards the log stops.
  • Sawmill Information Manager (SIM) modules for data exchange/communication link with other sawmill machine centers, management and outside world control of data flow to/from GUI terminal, process data for reporting and monitoring the operation of other machine centers active feedback to affect the bucking optimization to meet a particular product mix (priority orders), or to smooth material flow through mill (feedback customized to needs of mill).
  • Extensive production reports.
  • Hardware platform is state-of-the-art Intel-based processor(s) running Microsoft Windows NTTM operating system providing a user friendly graphical interface.
  • Graphical user interface that is comprehensive and user-friendly so operator and management can monitor and interact easily and effectively with this most important and complex part of mill operation.
  • MPM provides customer support via telephone or modem to remotely access system to help examine, troubleshoot or provide new software releases quickly and efficiently.
